Your Teen Bedroom Closet - Your Main Centre of Organization

By Sherrie Le Masurier

I’m constantly searching for my favorite clothes and have difficulty finding matching shoes and accessories. Do you have any great ideas on how to organize my teen bedroom closet so I am no longer stumbling over stuff?

Your teen bedroom closet is relatively easy to organize once you know what to look for in products and take some initial measurements.

The organizing and storage market is full of everything from custom shelving, hanging bars and other closet organizers that will meet your individual needs.

The best closet organizers will provide you with different types of storage options so you can organize all your clothing, shoes, and accessories in the same space.

Depending on your particular bedroom closet needs you can select from shoe-cubby shelves, multi-garment hangers, belt ranks or pole-hung canvas shelves which are ideal for storing sweatshirts or pyjamas.

You might also want to talk to your parents about the possibility of getting a customized bedroom closet designed by a company that specializes in closet organization.

Regardless of whether you just add a few organizers like a second rod, some crates, hanging shelves, shoe racks or go for an entire closet organization unit you’ll want to make sure you accurately access your available closet space.

The best way to do this is to remove everything from your closet and measure the dimensions. Now give some thought as to what types of things you want to store in your teen bedroom closet. This ground work will help you determine what kind of organizer, shelf or storage container should go where.

Once you have an idea of what you want to store in your bedroom closet and what kind of organizing tools you need to house these items in, comes the ‘big purge’. Instead of trying to cram all your stuff back into your newly re-designed closet take the time to weed out clothes and other items you no longer wear or don’t really want or need.

This is also a good time to sort through items that would more logically be stored elsewhere like out of season clothing or personal care items that could find a home in a bathroom closet or under the sink.

When it comes organizing a teen bedroom closet, there are a few things to keep in mind.

Fold more, hang less.  Since hanging takes up more space consider folding your clothes and storing them on shelves or in bins or baskets.

Stay flexible. Since your clothing requirements will change over time, a well-organized teen bedroom closet features flexible storage units like adjustable shelves and removable rods.

Keep like things together. To easily locate your clothes, group them by type like T-shirts with T-shirts, long sleeve shirts with long sleeve shirts, jeans with jeans etc.
